The Alternate History Overview
(Timeline Changes)

The Emlyn Gwen series is set in an alternate history where Rome-during the time of Claudius- was not able to conquer Britannia. Rome fell during the crisis of the third century, and taken over by a militant version of the Mithran cult. Towards the end of the 3rd century, a leader in Britannia rose to wage war on the Roman remnant still left on the isle, a war known as the the “war of two wolves.” as a result, the isle became forever known as Kymbri(Kahm-bree) A succession of strong leaders solidified Kymbri’s unity, allowing them to protect against invaders over the years, changing the Anglo-Saxon invasion among numerous other differences.

Setting & Character

Kymbri is one generation into a different kind of industrial revolution based on electricity(electric baroque), and it is changing the nation fast, maybe too fast. The isle rests comfortably behind the channel, and on European soil by what amounts to buffer states called Gallia and Gaelland. On the other side of these lands is Mithra who are angling to take back all the lands that the old Roman empire once held.

Emlyn is a by-product of Kymbrian opulence and high patrician wealth. The Kymbrian word for someone forced into servitude is gilla. Emlyn is a special kind of gilla known as a martial. Gilla have always existed, but martial’s are only as old as Kymbri itself, but 1400 years is still a long time and that particular institution has changed little. A martial's purpose is to be raised with their master or mistress as a close companion and later broken into gillary and from then on their owner possesses almost constant protection. Now due to the time, need, upkeep, and training-as well as the strict bloodlines-they are rare and have largely passed into whispered stories and cheaply produced novels that speak on their great fighting prowess.

“We are bred for one purpose: to protect our Masters from all threats. To protect them even if the result is our own death; this is your duty. To die protecting our Masters is the ultimate loyalty. To die in your duty gives honor to your ancestors. That is our lot." -Stella Olevanti (martial gilla, circa-1463ank)

Praise for The Education of Miss Emlyn Gwen

"Morgan Potts utilizes her poetic voice and eye for detail to bring to life an alternate world filled with murder and back stabbing. A reflection on societal expectations and how detrimental it can be to our fragile psyches to both conform to those ideals as well as to reject them in favor of the authentic true self. I look forward to reading the next volume."

-Gori Suture, author of The Paradox Chronicles.

"It could be labeled an lgbt romance, or a controversial indictment of humanity and its obsession with hierarchical othering, or even an adventure with a badass female protagonists.

It has lush, evocative descriptions that both tantalize and repel all of the senses. A twisty, shocking plot that flirts with tropes but ultimately delivers a fresh and unpredictable story."
