Emlyn Gwen: Born a bloodlined gilla and trained throughout her life to be a part of a dying tradition called martialdom. She's an expert with revolvers, hand-to hand combat, and spotting threats before they become a problem. Since her Breaking(a right of passage all young martial go through.) she has had one job; to protect her reclusive mistress, her childhood friend- Sylvia Chronister.
Sylvia Chronister: Heiress to the Chronister bloodline and all of its fortune. She despises high-patrician society, for their traditions helped her to metaphorically kill the girl she fell in love with- Emlyn Gwen. Now that Emlyn is her martial and completely in the grip of a gillaried mind, there is a type of invisible wall between them like a monument to frustration.
Mira: A low-patrician sent low and made a gilla is a rare thing, but not unheard of. A traitoress who finds herself in a loathsome position in the Chronister household.
Andreas Chronister: The patriarch of the dwindling Chronister family-clan. Sylvia's father.
Camilla Rhydderch un Chronister: Born and raised as a Rhydderch un Chronister before marrying into the main bloodline, some say she's the most steely of all the Rhydderch. A stalwart of old tradition, she's Andreas's wife and Sylvia's mother.
Eneddia Chronister: The older sister of Andreas and Sylvia's aunt. Eneddia exhibited sociopathy since she was very young. Causing the death of a few bloodlined gilla and stealing funds led to her disownment.
Briar Gwen: Emlyn's father, whose empathy was never beaten out of him, leaving him in a constant fight with his traditions versus his natural inclinations as a father.
Stella Olevanti: Emlyn's mother. Cold as ice and only cares about protecting Camilla while brutally teaching Emlyn the martial tradition.
Erasmus Colmane: A famous, or infamous, gilla catcher known for solving a few high-profile cases involving gilla by utilizing unusual methods.
Lucius Donsill un Prontinix: A high-patrician, veteran, and proprietor of many manufactories, he is trying to win Sylvia's hand. However, not all is as it appears.
Maield Caldivin: The martial of Lucius who seems to have a genuine interest in Emlyn beyond breeding more martials.
Finicus: A young runaway gilla turned pick-pocket.
Strawberry: Head gilla in the Chronister insula with more skills than one might imagine.
Lemon: A sour-faced gilla in the Chroniser household.
Galan Hornbow: Training houses for gilla fell out of popularity because of their brutality, but Galan survives for his model of training is a bit... strange, or perhaps he profits somewhere else? Best saved for gossip.
Kittie: A five-year contract gilla who was tasked to teach Sylvia and Emlyn when they were between the ages of five and ten. After the five years were up, she married Hornbow and started a family with him.
Ms. Cord: A free servant who has been the cook at the Chronister house since before Sylvia and Emlyn could remember.
Bootsie: An effeminate homeless teen who was so desperate for a meal and a warm bed that he declared himself a gilla at the feet of Eneddia Chronister. Fearing to be alone, his mother followed suit.
